Practising Buddhism

By Sonam Dolma  /  November 14, 2014;

My name is Sonam Dolma. I was born in Tibet. Now I am 24 years old. In 2011 I came to India from Tibet. The reason why I came here was that I couldn’t practice Buddhism and couldn’t learn the Tibetan language in Tibet. Moreover, I couldn’t visit His Holiness the Dalai Lama and also we couldn’t keep his photo in our home. So my parents said that my younger sister and I must go to India, first to visit His Holiness the Dalai lama and second, to go to school to get education. Because in Tibet if parents want to send their children to school, first they must pay a very high school fee.

So, my parents are farmers. They don’t have a job. My parents didn’t have money to pay for three children (I have one younger sister and one younger brother). Therefore we decided to come here. If Tibetan children want to go to school here, we can go to school without having to pay.

But when I first came here and started a new life, during one and a half years I got into many troubles. The first big problem was that I couldn’t communicate with anyone and that included Tibetans too. I was so upset during that time. Me and my sister spent many nights crying. But when I called my parents I never said that I had got problems here, I didn’t want them to worry about us. Hence, I started to learn different languages. Now I can communicate with everyone and also my life has changed a lot. Now I’m so happy here, I love this small and warm town. No matter where I will be, I would never forget every moment which I spent here.

I have one aim which is to become a translator. When my aim comes true, after that, I would like to provide one good life for my sister. I love my sister very much. So I really don’t want her to go the same way which I went.
