The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) has been investing in creating employment opportunities for young Tibetans by providing resources such as training workshops for people with vocational careers, and scholarships for academic high fliers. The CTA has also inaugurated the Tibetan Careers Center which “is an important part of the Tibetan administration’s policies to create job opportunities for unemployed youths and school dropouts through counseling and training” said Mr. Jigme Tsultrim, the head consultant of the Tibetan Careers Center. The Tibetan Careers Center is funded by the CTA in association with TechoServe, a nonprofit global economic development organisation.

The CTA’s Women’s Empowerment Desk of Social and Resource Development Fund arranged a four day workshop attended by thirty four young Tibetan people at the Institute of Small Trade Learning Center in Neelamangala, Bangalore. The overall aim of the workshop was to promote entrepreneurship amongst the Tibetan community.

Tenzin Tseyang, of the Women’s Empowerment Desk, said that “the main goal of the workshop is to produce more skill and service based entrepreneurs especially women entrepreneurs in our community in the long term. It also aims to address some common problems faced by some of the trainees in past like lack of self confidence to sell their own skills in the market, and lack of achievable goals and proper information on the opportunities available”. The workshop was attended by Tibetans who are practising a range of skills that include tailoring, cookery, hair dressing, medical transcription, and multimedia.

Recently, the Tibetan Careers Centre offered a ten day JobAbility training workshop that was aimed towards students and Tibetan youths who are unemployed. Sixteen Tibetans including unemployed youths, college students, and graduates took part. Jigme Tsultrim said “The JobAbility training was conducted by the Tibetan Career Centre to prepare and provide Tibetan youngsters with cutting-edge skills and knowledge. We strive to provide better employment prospects by giving them trainings on resume writing, interviews and English communication”.

Additionally, the new Business Process Outsourcing venture, which is part of Uma Ling Technical Solutions, was inaugurated by Sikyong Dr Lobsang Sangay. The company strives to provide jobs for young Tibetan people. During the new BPO’s inauguration, Sikyong said “Through this project we hope that the unemployed, uneducated and educated youth who want to remain within the Tibetan community will get jobs, and in that sense Uma Ling Technical Solutions is the beginning of many projects and for other centers to replicate it not just in and around Dharamshala but in other Tibetan settlements as well”.
