His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived in Japan on November 8 to impart Buddhist teachings and values through a series of public talks from November 9 – 26 in various temples, universities and schools across Japan. The Mission of Buddhists in the 21st century, Compassion- the Key to Happiness, A Guide to Boddhisattava’s Way of Life and Medical Progress and Warm Heart are some of the topics that the Holiness will speak on during the talks.

This is the 23rd visit of the Holiness the Dalai Lama to Japan. He was welcomed at Narita airport by Representative Lungtok and Mr Hiraoko Kouichi, along with a representative of the Indian embassy and a group of 100 Tibetans.

Speaking to the Japanese media, the Holiness said that the youth of today shoulders the responsibility to make the world a better place. He said that he strongly believes that it is not material development that makes one happy, it is the development of inner values.

On November 9 His Holiness visited the historic Honganji Temple in Kyoto where he was received by the Chief Priest of the temple and a gathering of 500 Tibetans. His Holiness said, “Peace is not a mere absence of war or violence…what leads to inner peace is cultivating a compassionate heart”.

Moving on to Osaka, His Holiness gave a three-day teaching on Shantideva’s  Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life.  To Tibetan devotees, His Holiness said, “I encourage you to study logics and philosophy in order to understand Buddhism”.

Following a visit to Koyasan, His Holiness visited the Japanese Parliament on 16 November and spoke to 229 parliamentarians from different political parties on the theme Tibet and Japan in the global world. He was greeted with a thunderous applause. A Parliamentary support group for Tibet has been set up in the Japanese Parliament, which pledged to reinvigorate its support to the issue of Tibet. Speaking to the group, His Holiness said that their support for the Tibetan issue represents a universal commitment to justice and truth.
