The new Indian state of Telangana has been created by splitting off the under-developed, agricultural northern area of Andhra Pradesh following a 50-year campaign for separate status. Telangana has a population of 35 million and includes the city of Hyderabad. The Telangana Rashtra Samithi party will form the first state government. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana share the same language of Telugu.
