Former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, whose career in politics spanned 5 decades, has died at the age of 84. After emergency surgery on a blood clot in his brain on 10 August Mukherjee tested positive for COVID-19 and remained in a coma. A lung infection later led to septic shock which killed the former Congress stalwart. Prime Minister Modi called Mukherjee a “towering statesman” who provided “wise counsel.”
