Over 7,000 people from 69 countries attended His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s teachings at Tsuklakhang, the main temple in Dharamsala, from June 1-4. The teaching had been requested by Nalanda Shikhsha, a group of 16 Sangha organisations across India, and this is the second time that an Indian group has requested teachings.  Over 1,200 of the participants were Indian.

The four days of teachings focused on Shantideva’s A Guide to the Boddhisattva’s Way of Life (chodjug) and were free and open to the public.

“I am pleased to give teachings to Indians as these teachings originated from India,” the Dalai Lama said on June 1. The teachings came at an appropriate time, as the official website of His Holiness (dalailama.com) was made available in Hindi on May 25.

“Giving teachings on Buddhism back to Indians is like returning their ancestral Buddhism to a new generation of Indians,” His Holiness added.

The teachings began with a recitation of Heart Sutra in Sanskrit led by a female Indian disciple. His Holiness then spoke about the desire of every living being to attain happiness and escape suffering.

His Holiness taught in Tibetan, with live English, Hindi, Chinese and Russian translations. Live webcasts were available on the official website.

“His Holiness always speaks about respecting other cultures and religions which everybody can relate to even if you are not a Buddhist,” said Avi, a disciple from England.

The teachings concluded on June 4 with an empowerment prayer session.

His Holiness will visit Pune City during Rev Dada JP Vaswani’s 95th birthday celebrations in July. “His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Dada have great love and respect for each other,” said a spokesperson from the Sadhu Vaswani Mission.
