DHARMSALA, India – Lobsang Sangay has been sworn in for his second term as prime minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile, which he says will make maximum efforts to achieve regional autonomy for Tibet during his five-year term, but will prepare a strategy for the next 50 years if it’s unsuccessful.

The oath-taking ceremony took place Friday in the northern hill Indian town of Dharmsala, the headquarters of the government-in-exile, in the presence of Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama.

Tibetan exiles across the world re-elected Sangay in March.

China says Tibet has historically been part of its territory since the mid-13th century, and the Communist Party has governed it since 1951. But many Tibetans say they were effectively independent for most of their history.
