Sikyong Dr Lobsang Sangay accompanied His Holiness the Dalai Lama on his visit to the United States of America, beginning on February 17. During his visit, the Sikyong attended the Losar, or Tibetan New Year, celebrations in Minnesota, in which His Holiness the Dalai Lama delivered a discourse emphasising the effect of violence and the utmost importance of compassion and non-violence.

At the Losar ceremony, Sikyong released a statement that read, “Although this occasion entails celebration, we must also uphold our traditional values of humility, integrity and resilience. Much of the global goodwill that we enjoy today comes from our commitment to non-violence and because our cause is just. Similarly, we should always remember our brothers and sisters inside Tibet who are living under immeasurable repression and hardship.”

After the White House released an official statement confirming President Barack Obama’s support for the Middle Way Approach – which was discussed during a meeting with His Holiness the Dalai Lama – the Sikyong commented on the importance of this meeting saying it “sends a very powerful message to Tibetans inside Tibet because it gives them a sense of hope that their voices are heard, even by the most powerful person in the world,” and that “The respect shown to His Holiness by President Obama means a lot to Tibetans all over the world, particularly inside Tibet,”

The Sikyong left for Canada to meet dignitaries there and to speak with Tibetan-Canadian communities after his United States visit concluded on March 6.
