His Holiness the Dalai Lama is one of the most beloved and revered spiritual leaders of the modern era. His far-reaching legacy as a guardian of knowledge and a bridge between spiritual disciplines has resonated across the globe—across Buddhist traditions and into the realms of interfaith dialogue, academia, science, peacemaking, and statecraft.

To honor this remarkable exemplar of compassion and gentle wisdom whose influence has transcended denominations, doctrines, and dogmas, and extended across national borders and political ideologies, the International Buddhist Confederation held a landmark Dharma gathering in New Delhi on 13 July: “Celebrating 90 Glorious Years of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama: Spiritual Wisdom & Global Relevance.” Luminaries of the Buddhist world came together to celebrate the spiritual benefactions of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, Tenzin Gyatso, who marked his 90th birthday on 6 July.

The international commemoration brought together some 500 participants from across the globe, including eminent spiritual leaders, Buddhist scholars, respected monastics, and devoted practitioners—from as far afield as Bhutan, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Russia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Uganda, the UK, the US, and Vietnam. This global presence affirmed not only His Holiness’s enduring spiritual journey, but also the timeless relevance of the Buddhadharma: a path of light, wisdom, and compassion offering a timeless message of peace, interconnection, and transformation in a divided and wounded world.

His Holiness the 43rd Sakya Trizin, Gyana Vajra Rinpoche, was the keynote speaker for the occasion, giving voice to the wisdom, values, and aspirations so often championed by the Dalai Lama, founded on compassion, ethical living, and interfaith harmony.

“I had the profound honor of meeting His Holiness last week in Dharamsala during his birthday celebration,” the Sakya Trizin remarked. “Despite his advanced years, His Holiness the Dalai Lama appears extraordinarily radiant, youthful, and healthy, impressing me as always with his remarkable memory, recollecting past events with vivid clarity.
