February 3, 2017;

India Today, PTI, 2 February 2017

Dharamsala (HP), Feb 2 (PTI) The Trump Administration will support the Tibet cause and continue to encourage dialogue between Beijing and representatives of Tibetan Government-in-Exile and the Dalai Lama, according to the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) here.

In a press statement today, CTA said US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has responded “favorably” to it and promised that the issue of political prisoners will be incorporated in the US diplomatic engagements with China.

Tillerson considers the issues of religious freedom of Christians, Tibetan Buddhist, Uygyur Muslims and Falun Gong practitioners as “high priority”, it said.

In response to the US commitment to Sino-Tibet dialogue, the Secretary of State mentioned that while recognising Tibet as part of the Peoples Republic of China, he will continue to encourage dialogue between Beijing and representatives of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile and the Dalai Lama, it said.

He stressed that he would also encourage Beijing and the governments of all nations to respect and preserve the distinct religious, linguistic, and cultural identity of the Tibetan people worldwide, the CTA said. PTI CORR SMN
